Pompeian room

Designed by Gugliemo Bechi, the small semicircular bathroom was used by noble guests at parties and balls to reorder their hair.

The architecture and stylistic features are taken from the ornamental scheme of the Fourth Pompeian style (reign of Nero) and refer to originals that have been lost but are illustrated in an engraving made in 1824 by the French architect François Mazois. However, the eclecticism of the overall design reveals the influence of other Pompeian sources.

This type of decoration was extremely popular in Naples between the 1820s and 1840s while the oils painted over a layer of stucco applied to the wall resemble the encaustic painting used during the Greco-Roman period.
