Red room

(Louis XIV room) This is the only room that still preserves the original decoration by the Neapolitan architect Gaetano Genovese who was commissioned by Carl Mayer von Rothschild in the 1850s. The stucco and grisailles are similar to the decoration carried out by the same architect for the royal palace (Palazzo Reale).

The floor is made of earthenware tiles painted with a faux marble design while the walls are entirely covered in red damask wallpaper which alternates with large mirrors and fixtures gilded and carved by the gilder Giuseppe de Paola.

The ceiling is decorated with a painting by Francesco Oliva portraying the  Allegory of  Architecture. The display cases contain several exhibits of the roughly one thousand five hundred pieces from the princess’ collection of decorative arts.
